We support that the definition should be linked to the WHO definition.

However, we remain concerned at the potential unintended consequence of taking support away from other neurodevelopmental disorders, and believe it is important that the Welsh Government is able to broaden the definition.

There needs to be mechanisms for support to occur, while a person is waiting for a diagnosis based on need, rather than depending on a diagnosis. This may include additional support for schools or extra help with care.

Assessment should be linked to needs rather than based on a diagnosis. There should be assessments based on need prior to this and additional support for schools and  carers , which is based on need rather than a diagnosis while the person is waiting for a diagnosis and this support should continue based on need even if there is no diagnosis of autism.
